About Me

“Remember the two benefits of failure. First, if you do fail, you learn what doesn't work; and second, the failure gives you the opportunity to try a new approach.”

- Roger Von Oech

 Mission Statement:

My mission in ISM this year is to help as many people as possible through progress in an area of medical research. I will succeed by being innovative, focused, and unafraid to fail. I will utilize my mentor and all resources at my disposal to create concise and inventive works.

I entered the ISM program as a junior and ISM 1 student during the fall of 2017. I am using my time in the program to study medical research science. I value loyalty, equality, and originality, all things that important people in my life, such as my friends, parents and grandparents have taught me. I have had wonderful role models in both of my parents. They are both extremely hard working and have taught me the power of honesty and kindness. I was born in Tucson, Arizona, and when I was four, my parents and I moved to Frisco, Texas. My parents wanted me to be in a great school district, and Frisco is one of the best. The opportunities they ensured I would receive here have been invaluable. From extracurriculars such as choir and theatre to classes like ISM and Anatomy and Physiology, I have been given many chances to figure out my “why”, or what I’m passionate about.

I started musical theatre at a small place in Richardson when I was five and I began choir in the seventh grade. The arts are very important to me, and at one point, I even thought I would like to major in classical music. However, once I began high school and enrolled in courses like biology and med term, I realized my real passion was for science. Through an anatomy course this past summer at Duke university I grew in my understanding of the human body and scientific process. I love the open endedness of the labs and the chance to problem solve. And I love how the scientific community’s knowledge is always changing and growing. I now plan to go to college for a biochem degree, and stay for a doctorate. Once I am out of college, I would like to get a job researching and teaching at another college. I believe the chance to conduct research in the medical field will allow me to make an impact on global health while doing something I love.

Therefore, the topic I have chosen to pursue this year in ISM is medical research. I believe this is the best area of study for me, because I enjoy innovating, working without strict guidelines, and dictating my own goals.. In addition, the human body, and the ability of each body system and structure to work together fascinates me. Based on the body systems I find the most interesting, I would like to work specifically with immune system disorders. Some of the disorders I am most interested in include STD’s, malaria, and influenza. These appeal to me specifically because I believe I could make a great impact on people’s health by researching these common disorders. I am looking forward to my time in ISM this year, and certainly plan to make the most of it.
